Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 24: A Fond Farewell To…

The doctor is out.

Probably forever.

On Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 24, fans were forced to say goodbye to yet another series regular on this beloved drama.

But this wasn’t a case of Katherine Heigl dissing the series and getting shown the door.

Or of Patrick Dempsey openly expressing his irritation with his role and getting killed off in violent fashion.

This time around, those who follow the show closely weren’t even surprised when Jerrika Hinton’s Stephanie made a declaration about her job and her future and how she needs to take a long break.

The actress had previously asked to be released from her contract after landing a starring role in Alan Ball’s new HBO drama series Here, Now.

And the request was gladly accepted by creator Shonda Rhimes, who released the following statement after the Grey’s Anatomy finale aired on Thursday night:

Actors evolve differently and when an actor like Jerrika comes to me and says she wants to try something new creatively, I like to honor that/

Jerrika has shared so much of herself with Stephanie and I am incredibly proud of the journey we’ve taken together.

While I’m sad to see Stephanie leave Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, I am excited to see what’s next for Jerrika.

For her final episode, Stephanie acted as a hero while a fire raged throughout the hospital.

She saved a young woman’s life and then collapsed in a heap from burns she suffered shortly afterward, telling Richard while being treated that something had to change for her.

“I need to travel and… explore… and hike… and breathe… away from the monitors and the blood,” Stephanie said, lying in a hospital bed and then telling her mentor:

“You changed my life, Dr. Webber. You taught me how to take my past and find my path. Thank you.”

Ball, who created True Blood for HBO, is coming out with a series that chronicles the Bishops, a multi-racial family made up of a philosophy professor father (Tim Robbins) and his lawyer wife (played by Holly Hunter).

The couple has adopted three children from Somalia, Vietnam and Colombia and also has a biological child.

Hinton will portray Ashley, one of the adopted children who is now the powerhouse behind an online fashion shopping site.

This character was was born in America to Somalian refugees and was taken in by the Bishops when her mom died and her dad was deported.

The series itself is still going strong.

It will kick off Season 14 in September and it has spawned an upcoming Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, one set in Seattle and focused on a group of firefighters.

Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff: Coming to ABC!

ABC confirmed some bad news and shocked fans with some amazing news on Tuesday afternoon.

First, the bad news:

Scandal really is coming to an end after next year’s seventh season.

Said creator Shonda Rhimes in a statement regarding the conclusion of this beloved drama:

“Deciding how to end a show is easy. Deciding when to finish is quite simple when the end date is years away. But actually going through with it? Actually standing up to say: ‘This is it?’ Not so much.

“So, next year we are going all out. Leaving nothing on the table. Creating this world in celebration.

“We are going to handle the end the way we like to handle the important things in our Scandal family: all together, white hats on, gladiators running full speed over a cliff.”

This sucks, as know.

But ABC has at least softened the blow by also announcing the following:

Rhimes will executive produce an upcoming Grey’s Anatomy spinoff!

There may not be enough exclamation points there; allow us to rectify the mistake: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

The series will be written by longtime Grey’s Anatomy Executive Producer Stacy McKee and will premiere some time in early 2017, presumably after How to Get Away With Murder ends its season.

As for what the spinoff will center on?

Red. Hot. Firefighters!

No casting decisions have been made and few details are available at this time.

But the unnamed show will focus on a number of firemen and firewomen in Seattle.

“No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey’s signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff,” said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey in a statement today.

Greys guy

Added the network itself:

“From the captain to the newest recruit, we follow these brave men and women as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock.”

Sounds like your basic, let’s-mix-serious-work-with-suspenseful-and-romantic-play Rhimes fare, doesn’t it?

Grey’s Anatomy will conclude Season 13 this Thursday night.

According to the official synopsis for Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 24, there will be a massive explosion at the hospital, leaving many lives in jeopardy and resulting in a major cliffhanger.

Sounds like the sort of thing that will require a handful of firefighters to show up on the scene, either this week or to kick off Season 14.

And then… BOOM! You’ve got the beginning of your spinoff.

Well played, ABC.

Cycle through the photos above to delve into ALL the scoop doled out by ABC today.

It includes a hilarious spinoff, an unexpected revival and so much more!

Sara Ramirez Hints at Grey’s Anatomy Departure

Is Grey’s Anatomy about to lose another core cast member?

We may be reading too much into a single Tweet (we are a celebrity gossip site, though, that’s sort of what we do), but Sara Ramirez has left fans of this drama buzzing via the following message she wrote on Thursday night:

That’s a wrap for Doctor #CallieTorres #Season13 #GreysAnatomy #ThankYou all for an enriching & unforgettable #Rollercoaster ride!

She could definitely just be referring to the end of filming on Grey’s Anatomy Season 12.

But her contract is up in June and Grey’s Anatomy is known for losing series regulars, especially in recent years.

Sandra Oh departed the series after Season 10, taking her character to an entirely different country in order to head up the wing of a hospital.

Then, last season, Shonda Rhimes and company killed off Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd in a move that still has folks buzzing… including Ellen Pompeo.

What other hints are there that Ramirez could be next?

Her character of Callie is involved in a storyline that finds her fighting for custody of her daughter with ex-wife, Arizona.

This is because Callie wants to move to New York with her new girlfriend, which gives the show a very easy to way write Callie out.

Neither Ramirez nor any ABC rep has responded to requests for confirmation of the star’s departure or of her sticking around.

Since typing the aforementioned mysterious Tweet, Ramirez has simply written “”#TGIT #BuckleUp for the ride! #GreysAnatomy” on her social media account.

Folks who watch Grey’s Anatomy online have seen the actress on their screens since Season 2, while she was made a series regular in Season 3.

Several longtime cast members, meanwhile, have contract that also expire this summer, although ABC has already renewed Grey’s Anatomy for Season 13.

Set in a hospital, it’s the sort of series that can easily bring in new doctors and characters when the situation calls for it, making it similar to ER, a drama that ran for approximately 49 seasons.

In other words: no matter what happens with Sara Ramirez, Grey’s Anatomy will be on the air for as long as Shonda Rhimes wants it to be.

Patrick Dempsey Lists Malibu Estate in Wake of Grey’s Anatomy Departure

Former Grey’s Anatomy leading man and newly-single Patrick Dempsey continues to make 2015 a year of dramatic changes in his life. His latest?

Putting his unique estate in Malibu up for sale for a whopping $ 14.5 million.

The home boasts three acres of land, three bedrooms, ocean views and a yard composed of a spacious pool, fire pit, climbing wall and a pizza oven.

“We were looking for a little land and space, and a house with some architectural significance,” Dempsey shared with Architectural Digest in 2009.

He added, “Everywhere you looked there was something visually pleasing. The simplicity appealed to me, and the inside felt expansive and calming.”

The home was originally purchased in 2009 for $ 7 million; Dempsey shared the property with his wife Jillian Fink and the couple’s three children.

Fast-forward to today and Patrick and Jillian Dempsey are divorcing and he has left Grey’s Anatomy after 11-plus seasons on the ABC hit drama.

There are reports that Patrick was fired by Shonda Rhimes following an earlier suspension stemming from his poor work ethic and attitude.

In any case, he’s out the door … in every facet of his life it appears.

So where’s he headed next? In the real estate world, Dempsey found another home about a mile from Venice Beach, Calif., for a modest $ 1.9 million.

As for his McDreamy TV character’s fate … if you watch Grey’s Anatomy online, you’ll see how they handled the grieving process. By not showing it.

Grey’s Anatomy STUNNER: Who’s Dead Now?!?

Another catastrophe has struck Grey’s Anatomy.

Another core cast member has said goodbye.

But this one may McHurt for a McWhile: Derek Shepherd is dead.

With Patrick Dempsey having made no secret over the past couple months that he was interested in moving on from the series, his beloved Dr. Derek Shepherd was blindsided by a semi on Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 21

Meredith is now a widow and Dempsey’s 11-year run on the wildly popular ABC drama has come to an end.

“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character – for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our McDreamy, said creator Shonda Rhimes via statement.

“Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example – happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true – of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all.

“Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.”

The series, of course, has lost a slew of original cast members over the years; from T.R. Knight to Katherine Heigl; Isaiah Washington to Sandra Oh.

But this is McDreamy. This one is really gonna leave a mark.

Said ABC in a statement of its own:

After 11 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we’ve been proud to be the home of ‘McDreamy’ and the ‘Mer/Der’ love story.

The devotion of Grey’s fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey’s talent. ‘McDreamy’ will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.

So… is it finally time for the network to cancel Grey’s Anatomy? React now!

NOTE: A special two-hour installment will air on Thursday. Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 22 will be titled “She’s Leaving Here.”

Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 18 Recap: You’ve Got Males

It was raining men on Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 18, what with Derek back in Seattle and Kevin Alejandro debuting as police captain Dan Pruitt and Taylor John Smith getting his flirt on with Stephanie.

We started out on a positive note, with Meredith telling Maggie she has it all and would even “beat herself up” over being one of those people… if she wasn’t having so much sex with her husband.

That husband, meanwhile, was learning that he needed Amelia’s approval to be reinstated.

She had her doubts that he could be second in command, but he proved himself by hour’s end, as Amelia even opened up to her brother about Owen

Callie at Work

Elsewhere, Richard welcomed some elementary school kids on a field trip to the hospital, only for them to be present when two shot cops (who were brothers!) were brought it.

Both died within a half hour and Callie was left to examine their captain, who had been shot in the leg. Due to surgery, he’d have to be off his legs for up to eight weeks, but Dan said he didn’t mind.

He just fired his weapon for the first time in 14 years and a desk job sounded pretty great right about now.

Next, the teenager who drove the robbery getaway car was wheeled in. Go watch Grey’s Anatomy online and you’ll see he needed a new liver, STAT.

After Meredith refused to do so, Bailey asked the mother of one of the dead cops to donate the organ from one of her kids.

She said no at first, but then changed her mind after Dan explained that the police had all been trying to help the troubled kid.

Stephanie, meanwhile, hit it off with the cute chaperone of the school trip. Too bad he was only 17 years old! Also, Dan basically asked Callie out and Jackson honored Mark by cleaning up the fallen cops before their mom saw them.

What did you think of the introduction of Dan? The return of McDreamy? The Case of the Week?

Sound off now and then prepare for Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 19 next Thursday!

Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 13 Teaser: How to Save a Life

It may be easy to forget, especially after an hour such as Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 12, but this remains a show about really good doctors.

Yes, they often talk about sex a lot, as was the case this week when Amelia stopped by Owen’s for a bit of action and Meredith nearly flew to D.C. just to get it on with Derek.

But these Seattle-based physicians also excel at their job, as will be evident on Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 13.

Titled “Staring at the End,” the installment will focus prominently on Dr. Herman’s case, as Amelia gives a lecture that details the intricacies of the surgery… the surgery she feels rather confident about, as teased in the above trailer.

Elsewhere, Arizona and Herman will continue to bond over the amount of cases they’re trying to finish prior to the big procedure, while Bailey brings them a case of a pregnant woman who means a lot to her.
