Mets minor leaguer Taylor attacked by homeless man with tire iron

New York Mets minor-league pitcher Logan Taylor was attacked when he was walking down a street in Salt Lake City, Utah over the weekend. His team, the Las Vegas 51s, were in town to face the Salt Lake Bees.

A homeless man with a tire iron and a sock full of rocks asked for his wallet and hit him in the head with the tire iron, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Betsy Helfand.

Taylor suffered a concussion during the altercation and was then placed on the disabled list. He required several staples to repair a wound at the back of his head.

“There were a couple guys that saw it, Dom (Smith) and (Kevin) McGowan,” 51s manager Pedro Lopez said. “They tried to go after the guy when they realized it was Logan, but (the police) ended up catching the guy later on.”

The assailant was identified as 33-year-old Joshua Cruz. He fled on foot before being apprehended by local police.

Taylor has appeared in 20 games this season with the 51s, four of which were starts. He’s posted a 3.96 ERA over 38 2/3 innings.
