Mayim Bialik Angers Most of Free World with Op-Ed on Rape and Feminism

Mayim Bialik has stirred up some MAJOR controversy via an op-ed she wrote this weekend for The New York Times.

The inspiration behind it? Numerous allegations of rape and sexual misconduct against Harvey Weinstein.

Bialik’s apparent stance on this topic? It’s largely the fault of victims in these situations because they care too much about how they look.

Wait… WHAT?!?

In a piece titled “Being a Feminist in Harvey Weinstein’s World,” The Big Bang Theory star wrote that she has “experienced the upside of not being a “perfect ten” and then went on to explain why.

“As a proud feminist with little desire to diet, get plastic surgery or hire a personal trainer, I have almost no personal experience with men asking me to meetings in their hotel rooms,” Bialik said, adding:

“Those of us in Hollywood who don’t represent an impossible standard of beauty have the ‘luxury’ of being overlooked and, in many cases, ignored by men in power unless we can make them money.”

Over the past several days, a multitude of actresses have come forward and said Weinstein either made an inappropriate pass at them…

Or, in the worst cases, the movie producer actually raped them.

“Women should be able to wear whatever they want,” Bialik continued.

“They should be able to flirt however they want with whomever they want. Why are we the ones who have to police our behavior?

In a perfect world, women should be free to act however they want. But our world isn’t perfect.

Nothing – absolutely nothing – excuses men for assaulting or abusing women. But we can’t be naïve about the culture we live in.”

This is the main part of her post about which so many people have taken issue.

She’s basically saying this is the way in which the world works – men are simply going to prey on attractive females – and it’s up to the women to accept it and adjust accordingly.

“I plan to continue to work hard to encourage young women to cultivate the parts of themselves that may not garner them money and fame,” the actress wrote.

“If you are beautiful and sexy, terrific. But having others celebrate your physical beauty is not the way to lead a meaningful life.

“And if – like me – you’re not a perfect 10, know that there are people out there who will find you stunning, irresistible and worthy of attention, respect and love.

“The best part is you don’t have to go to a hotel room or a casting couch to find them.”

This is all really horrible and ridiculous.

If Bialik’s only point is that superficial beauty shouldn’t be the most important thing in life… well, she’d be right and there would be little to quibble with.

Instead, however, she’s somehow making a connection between women wanting to look good and MEN SEXUALLY ASSAULTING THEM.

Qualify her point however she wants to try, this is 100% victim blaming.

And we obviously aren’t alone in thinking as much.

“@missmayim229 I have to say I was dressed non provocatively as a 12 year old when men on the street masturbated at me,” actress Patricia Arquette tweeted on Saturday in response.

“It’s not clothing.”

“It is also not outrageous for anyone to expected to be treated in a professional manner by anyone in a professional relationship,” Arquette added.

Said another well-informed and well-spoken Twitter user, quoting Bialik and then using her words against her:

“I have decided that my sexual self is best reserved for private situations with those I am most intimate with. I dress modestly.”

This is disgusting. @missmayim is placing blame on victims and forgetting that rape and assault are about power, not about desire.

Bialik has not yet responded to the backlash.

Dove Apologizes for Most Ridiculously Racist Ad Ever

Dove is here to say its sorry.

The beauty company came under heavy fire late last week after for posting a Facebook ad in which a “dirty” African-American woman uses a bottle of Dove body wash to transform into a “clean” white woman.

This is very strongly the implication, at least.

In a third image from the ad, the white woman removes her shirt (and skin, we guess) to become an Asian woman.

As you might imagine, more than a small handful of Internet users took issue with this advertisement and its theme.

“This is gross. You think people of color can just wash away their melanin and become white? What were you going for, exactly? Your creative director should be fired,” wrote Angela Reinders on Facebook.

As screen shots of the ad made their way around social media, other confused and angry individuals chimed in.

“Are you joining the Trump administration now? WTF is that ad even supposed to mean?” Sonia Gupta Tweeted at the company.

On Saturday, Dove – which is owned by Dutch-British transnational consumer goods company Unilever – issued an apology on its Twitter account for the advertisement.

The mea culpa reads as follows:

“An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offense it caused.”

The company shared a similar message on Facebook:

“Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused.

“The feedback that has been shared is important to us and we’ll use it to guide us in the future.

It’s always confounding when this sort of thing happens because such an ad must have been cleared by a lot of people.

It’s not as if this can be written off by a single bone-headed decision.

This is not the first time Dove has received major race-related backlash for a questionable ad, either.

In 2011, a controversial poster depicted three women standing in front of a wall designated in “before” and “after.”

The “before” woman had dark skin… the woman in between had medium-toned skin … and the woman in front of the “after” photograph was white.

In this case, Dove sought to clarify, not apologize.

“All three women are intended to demonstrate the ‘after’ product benefit. We do not condone any activity or imagery that intentionally insults any audience,” a company statement read at the time.

But the damage has maybe already been done.

“Okay, Dove… One racist ad makes you suspect. Two racist ads makes you kinda guilty,” wrote a Twitter user yesterday, citing each of these ads from the last few years.

Others, meanwhile, remained aghast at the brand’s original intention with last week’s ad, as one person wondered:

“What exactly were yall going for?

“What was the mark . . . I mean anyone with eyes can see how offensive this is. Not one person on your staff objected to this? Wow. Will not be buying your products anymore.”

What do you think of this scandal?

Does Dove deserve all the criticism it is receiving? Will you continue to use their products?

Or is this much ado over not very much?

Brady ties Favre, Manning for most career regular season wins

There are still a few records that Tom Brady doesn't have, though the list is about to get shorter.

With his team's win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night, the New England Patriots quarterback is now tied with Brett Favre and Peyton Manning for the most regular season wins by a quarterback at 186.

Brady already owns the record for most all-time wins, regardless of regular season or postseason, passing Manning’s record of 200 victories last December.

The 40-year-old passer will have his chance to take sole possession of the wins record in Week 6 against the New York Jets.
