Maryam Mirzakhani, First Woman to Win Math’s Highest Honor, Dies At 40

Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian who became the first woman to win math’s most prestigious prize, died Saturday after a four-year battle with breast cancer.

She was 40 years old.

In 2014, Mirzakhani was awarded the Fields Medal, which is commonly referred to as the “Nobel Prize for Mathematics” in order for those outside of the industry to fully grasp its importance.

It’s only given out once every four years and Mirzakhani earned the distinction for her work on dynamical systems and complex geometry.

Along with being the first female, she was also the first Iranian to garner the medal, which was created in 1936.

Born in Tehran, Mirzakhani came to the United States in order to attend graduate school at Harvard University.

She started working as a professor at Stanford University in 2008 and the school confirmed her passing on Saturday via its website.

“Maryam is gone far too soon, but her impact will live on for the thousands of women she inspired to pursue math and science,” said Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne in a statement, adding:

“Maryam was a brilliant mathematical theorist, and also a humble person who accepted honors only with the hope that it might encourage others to follow her path.

“Her contributions as both a scholar and a role model are significant and enduring, and she will be dearly missed here at Stanford and around the world.”

For the final four years of her life, Mirzakhani battle breast cancer, which eventually spread to her bone marrow.

In response to her passing, Iranian-American scientist Firouz Naderi shared his grief on Instagram, writing the following on Instagram:

“A light was turned off today… It breaks my heart.”

He later emphasized that Mirzakhani was a “genius, but also a daughter, a mother and a wife.”

Mirzakhani once famous said that mathematics made her feel like a detective.

“It is fun – it’s like solving a puzzle or connecting the dots in a detective case,” she said after winning the Fields Medal, according to NPR.

“I felt that this was something I could do, and I wanted to pursue this path.”

May she rest in peace.

The Racists Syrup To Something: Black Woman Referred To As “Aunt Jemima” By Her Doctor

A Doctor In Memphis Called His Black Patient “Aunt Jemima”

And this dude got a PHD? Cuz he’s acting like a Pretty Huge D***

A woman in Memphis is filing a complaint against the state medical board after her doctor called her racially-charged names multiple times. Lexi Carter says she couldn’t believe that her dermatologist, Dr. James Turner, was calling her this, until he did it for a second time.

Carter said, “he had a young girl — physician’s assistant trainee, a student — with him, and he looked at me and he goes, ‘Hi, Aunt Jemima.’”

Here’s the kicker, the D-bag doctor even admitted to calling his patient this racially-charged reference, saying that it was all a misunderstanding. He issued this public apology: “Ms. Carter is one of our very dear patients and has been for years. She is one of many African American patients and I count it a privilege to be their doctor. Anything I said that tarnishes that image and my respect for her was a misspoken blunder on my part and was not intended to show disrespect for Ms. Carter. I am very sorry for that misunderstanding.”

We don’t accept your apology, Dr. Turner. The fact that this man felt comfortable enough to repeatedly call poor Miss Carter “Aunt Jemima” multiple times is a travesty. Hopefully his “many African american patients” take their Black dollars somewhere else and stop supporting this horrible excuse for a professional.

The 13th Doctor Who Is Finally A Woman, Twitter Reacts

Well that took long enough. The 13th Doctor Who has been announced and the rumors—which many thought was a pipe dreams—were true, it’s a woman.

Actress Jodie Whittaker will be the Thirteenth Doctor. You may recognize her as the tormented mother from Broadchurch if you’re up on your BBC television game.

She will be replacing Peter Capaldi, and this is kind of a big deal.

While many on Twitter are celebrating the decision. There are plenty of male chauvinist tears being shed. Oh well.

And if you’re a legit Dr. Who fan, the Master’s last regeneration should have prepped you for this. Also, if this is enough to get you to quit the show, you won’t be missed.

Check out the best reactions to the 13th Doctor from Twitter below and on the flip.

Woman Taking A Selfie Causes $200,000 In Damage At An Art Gallery!

A woman in Los Angeles has apparently demonstrated just how damaging selfies can be by destroying whole row of pieces of art while trying to get that perfect image.

The moment, captured on video at the 14th Factory exhibition space in Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles shows a woman apparently bending down to try to get the perfect angle for a selfie shot down a row of the Hypercaine exhibition by Hong Kong-based artist Simon Birch and a series of international collaborators.

She loses her balance and leans back a bit too far, knocking over the first pedestal and sending the sculpture atop it tumbling, then knocking into the next pedestal in the row and causing a domino effect that takes out the whole row.

The incident happened two weeks ago in a 14,000 sq metre installation, and caused irreparable damage to some of the 12 crown-like sculptures, which were made from a variety of different materials, including precious metals, marble, wood, nylon and scrap metal.

Gloria Yu, one of the artists involved in the exhibition, told art and culture site Hyperallergic: “Three sculptures were permanently damaged and others to varying degrees. The approximate cost of damage is $ 200,000.” Posted by Abdul
